Reading Terminal Market is one of the oldest and largest public markets in the United States. The market is located at 12th and Arch Streets in the center city of Philadelphia, adjacent to the Convention Center all within a beautifully restored historic terminal building. It is open every day except for Sundays.
The Reading Terminal Market traces its roots back to 1859 when the Reading Railroad built a terminal to consolidate various rail lines. The terminal included a market, which quickly became one of the busiest in the city. In the early 20th century, the market was expanded and modernized, but it eventually fell into decline. In the 1970s, a group of concerned citizens and businesspeople banded together to save the market, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Today, the Reading Terminal Market is thriving, with over 80 vendors selling everything from fresh produce to gourmet cheeses to handcrafted chocolates. The market is also home to several restaurants, including a beer garden and a sit-down diner.
